What an AI gateway actually does

The objection is a real one. A gateway is, on its face, a proxy with a pricing table. Stripe employs enough infrastructure engineers to build one. What the replies argued back

The first is that the moat is contractual, not technical. The second reading treats switching cost as the wrong metric. Individual developers can leave cheaply, but the enterprises that generate the spend cannot: their procurement, invoicing and cost attribution are wired to the gateway's ledger. Low technical switching cost and high organizational switching cost routinely coexist, and Stripe of all buyers knows which one bills.
The third is the one that explains the price. Stripe is not paying for a proxy, it is paying for position in the payment flow of AI consumption. Model spend is metered, variable and settled between businesses, which is the exact shape Stripe already monetizes.
